Creating the conditions for faster broadband rollout
As part of wider efforts to boost the technological dynamism and economic competitiveness of the region, the EBRD has developed a new initiative to promote the roll-out of high-speed broadband.
The Accelerating Broadband Connectivity (ABC) initiative offers technical assistance to policy-makers and regulators to help them maximise the commercial viability of effective broadband provision. EBRD expertise guides the modernisation of policy, legal and regulatory frameworks, such as rules governing how construction permits are issued. These rules have a big impact on broadband roll-out as civil construction is the biggest expense linked to high-speed internet access.
The ABC initiative, a pilot version of which began in Cyprus in 2015, also helps countries develop a framework and funding models that encourage the spread of broadband to sparsely populated areas. In addition, the Bank stands ready to finance investment projects that support the acceleration of broadband infrastructure.
