Boosting business in Egypt by adopting international standards
When Egyptian enterpreneur Yomna El-Sheridy was looking for a new business idea in 2000, she identified olives as the product with a huge market potential in Egypt and abroad. And so Special Foods Industry International (SFII) was born.
Although the business quickly grew, El-Sheridy soon realised that Egyptian olives would only succeed in world olive consumption markets if they were of a sufficiently high quality and safety that met international certification standards.
So she called on the EBRD and its Small Business Support (SBS) team to help her upgrade production processes and to improve the quality, food safety and certification of SFII products, in line with the Global Standard of Food Safety (BRC), ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 22000:2005.
El-Sheridy’s business needs were specific. But as she says: “The EBRD language suits the private sector very well.” The SBS programme was able to provide tailored advice and training for staff in food safety, hygiene and good manufacturing practices and SBS consultants also helped El-Sheridy implement an integrated management system based on BRC requirements.
The EBRD’s support has proven a milestone in the company’s growth and success at home and abroad. Today, SFII is Egypt’s leading manufacturer and exporter of olives and olive oil in bulk and retail packing to the EU, the Middle East, Australia and North America.
